Hi, my name is Chiara, I am an Italian-English textile designer and illustrator. I grew up in the countryside, not far from Rome, in a house filled with exotic prints from my father’s travels and my mother’s artwork. Throughout my adult life, I've lived in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and Europe. My prints are as a form of playful escapism that bring to life the colours and forms discovered on my trips.
I appreciate the strange wild beauty that appears in every object, once we learn to slow down and look a little longer.
Why do I do what I do?
I always loved the idea of creating a visual narrative of my life to share with my family and others in the future. I believe each one of us has a stronger affinity with a specific medium, for some this can be photography or painting, for me this is illustration and textiles. As travelling has always been such an important source of inspiration to me, it felt natural to be diving the chapters of this story (my story) based on the flora and fauna of the places where I had spent an extended amount of time.
So in 2017 I started printing my first collection inspired by my life in London, followed by Ireland and Bali. I was about to start planning my Italian inspired collection, when I felt the urge to express this relationship with the territory and its nature in a more abstract way. Thanks to natural dyes I have discovered a deeper connection to the land, by foraging leaves, flowers and making pigments from these I can represent the essence of a specific place. I find this so fassinating and I can see the benefits it is having on other aspects of my life, by teaching me; unpredictability, respect, connection and patience.
